In June of 2018, as part of the AARP Community Challenge, Team Better Block partnered with AARP New Mexico, ABQ CiQlovia, and the City of Albuquerque along with local residents, stakeholders, volunteers, and many other partners to improve the quality of life for people of all ages along a stretch of Southern Ave SE in the International District just southeast of the City’s downtown. By using street furniture, outdoor seating, parklets, landscaping, pavement painting for bike lanes and crosswalks, and energizing public spaces with lively programming and local art, ABQ CiQlovia and Team Better Block utilized temporary to permanent changes in the built environment to initiate permanent enhancements in the quality of life for the local community.
On July 2nd, working with local stakeholders, Team Better Block surveyed the focus area for opportunities to enliven it. A community walk and talk on August 14th identified the core elements to make the area safe and walkable for all ages. On September 12th, the community returned to provide feedback on a concept plan and walk the focus area for final tweaks to the plan. Ultimately, the project built the vision from October 17th – 20th for Build Week and celebrated the rewards at the ABQ CiQlovia on the October 21st . Over 75 dedicated volunteers drilled and painted traffic calming and placemaking elements to cre-ate a livable community.
