As part of the 2018 AARP Community Challenge, Team Better Block partnered with the City of Birmingham and AARP Alabama, along with local residents, stakeholders and volunteers to improve the quality of life for people of all ages along a block of 2nd Avenue South at Pepper Place.
The project focused on creating a complete street on 2nd Avenue S between 28th and 29th Streets. The city has plans to make permanent infrastructure improvements to make this street a complete street that includes bike lanes, lighting, and landscaping.
Team Better Block’s design showed an alternative to the current design proposed by the city by demonstrating a shared-use protected trail, smaller travel lane sizes, and connectivity to the Jones Valley Trail.
The Better Block event on October 27th worked with the Market at Pepper Place to create a pop-up market place across the street from where the market normally takes place to show what a two-sided retail main street would look like. The new street section was tested for a week to gather data and feedback on the piloted design.
